Service Details

Service Description

Provides for court-ordered evaluation, no longer than 72 hours, of someone who is a danger to him/herself or others due to mental illness. Generally, the Baker Act is initiated by police or a mental health professional in an emergency. However, one witness of the danger may file a petition if the endangering act was committed within the last 20 days. A judge will review the papers within 24 hours and order the BSO to transport the individual to a mental health facility.

Eligibility

Individuals who are a danger to themselves or others due to mental illness. A person filing for Baker Act must be a police officer or licensed mental health professional.
